Ammonites defrancii was named by d'Orbigny (1846). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.R04189 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Dimorphinites (Vigoriceras) defrancei by Rioult (1994); it was recombined as Vigoriceras defrancei by Fernandez-Lopez and Diaz (2011).
