Taxonomy
Avicula linguaeformis was named by Evans and Shumard (1854).

It was recombined as Pteria linguiformis by Meek (1864); it was recombined as Pteria linguaeformis by Stephenson (1941); it was misspelled as Pteria lingulaeformis by Gill et al. (1966); it was recombined as Phelopteria linguaeformis by Speden (1970).
