Taxonomy
Belemnites sulcatus was named by Miller (1823). It is not extant. It is the type species of Belemnopsis.
It was recombined as Belemnopsis sulcata by Douville (1879); it was recombined as Holcobeloides sulcatus by Mitchell (2015).
