Cyathus dominicanus was named by Poinar (2022). Its type specimen is Poinar AF-9-20A and is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Poinar (2014).
