Terastiodontosaurus was named by Georgalis et al. (2024) [authorship as listed in publication is Georgalis & Smith; urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:DC23B781-B109-4EFB-9C0B-DA42DC09B838]. Its type is Terastiodontosaurus marcelosanchezi. It was considered monophyletic by Georgalis et al. (2024).

It was assigned to Trogonophidae by Georgalis et al. (2024).
