Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
M. Newman and N. Trewin 2001 | A jawless vertebrate that is fairly long (length c. 115 mm) and slender with a large well-formed hypocercal tail and fairly large ventral ®n. (The term ventral, rather than anal, is used since there is some doubt, discussed below, concerning the position of the anus.) The epichordal lobe of the tail has conspicuous supportive rods. The chordal lobe is very long and tapers to a ®ne point at its posterior end. The posterior edge of the ventral ®n is shorter than the anterior edge with a ratio of about 1:1´4. No dorsal ®ns or modi®ed dorsal scutes are present. No scales or scale-like structures are evident. The orbits are placed close to the dorsal surface near the anterior border. The branchial basket consists of between 12 and 16 branchial openings. Beneath the branchial openings runs a slanting row of branchial arches from the branchial openings to the ventral side of the animal. |
