Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
L. Grande 2010Lepisosteus bemisi sp. nov. differs from all other species of lepisosteid in (A) normally having 14 principal caudal rays (occasionally 13), and (B) normally having four branchiostegal rays (x = 3.7, r = 3-4, = 6). Also, it differs from other species of Lepisosteus in the following characters C-F. (C) Like L. osseus but unlike L oculatus, L. platyrhincus, and L. platostomus, the head length is relatively long, with a length of more than 34% of standard length. (D) The preorbitai to postorbital length ratio, like L. osseus, is normally greater than 2. (E) Its mandible is relatively shorter than in L. osseus. (F) The width to length ratios of several of the skull bones are greater than in L. osseus.
