Taxonomy
Orbicula nitida was named by Phillips (1836).

It was recombined as Discina nitida by Meek and Worthen (1873), Walcott (1884); it was recombined as Orbiculoidea nitida by Demanet (1934), Brunton and Tilsley (1991).
