Acteon (Rictaxis) painei grandior was named by Grant, IV and Gale (1931). Its type specimen is SDSNH 208 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Holser Canyon, which is in a Pliocene marine horizon in the Pico Formation of California.
It was recombined as Acteon grandior by Winterer and Durham (1962); it was recombined as Rictaxis painei grandior by Squires (2012).
