Palaeobalistum ponsortii was named by Heckel (1854). It is not extant. Its type locality is Mont-Aimé, which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial horizon in France.
It was recombined as Oropycnodus ponsorti by Poyato-Ariza and Wenz (2002).
