Stromateus hexagonus was named by Blainville (1818). It is the type species of Gyrodus.
It was recombined as Microdon hexagonus by Agassiz (1833), Agassiz (1842), Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Gyrodus hexagonus by Poyato-Ariza and Wenz (2002).
