Thecophyllia sarthacensis was named by d'Orbigny (1850). Its type specimen is syntype MNHN-F-B11060, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Montlivaltia sarthacensis by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1851); it was recombined as Montlivaultia sarthacensis by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857), de Fromentel (1861).
