Planulina membranacea was named by Ehrenberg (1854). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Globorotalia chapmani by Parr (1938); it was recombined as Globorotalia membranacea by Subbotina (1953); it was recombined as Globanomalina ovalis lakiensis by Haque (1956); it was recombined as Globorotalia elongata by Bolli (1957); it was recombined as Globorotalia (Globorotalia) ehrenbergi by Hillebrandt (1962); it was recombined as Planorotalites chapmani by Nederbragt and van Hinte (1987); it was recombined as Globanomalina chapmani by Olsson et al. (1999).

Parr 1938Test biconvex, oval, the dorsal surface more convex than the ventral, which is umbilicate: periphery lobulated, peripheral margin rounded; chambers comparatively few, no more than five in the last-formed whorl, each much larger than its predecessor; sutures depressed, not limbate, gently recurved on both sides of the test; wall smooth and punctate, with a silvery lustre; aperture an elongate slit with a slight lip, opening at the base of the last-formed chamber into the umbilical depression. Length up to 0.65 mm.

Bolli 1957Shape of test very low trochospiral, compressed, spiral side often slightly concave, umbilical side moderately convex; equatorial periphery slightly lobate, elongate; axial periphery subacute to acute but without keel. Wall calcareous, perforate, surface smooth. Chambers moderately to strongly compressed; about 12, arranged in 2- 2.5 whorls, the 6 chambers of the last whorl increasing rapidly in size. Sutures on spiral side slightly curved, distinctly depressed; on umbilical side radial, distinctly depressed. Umbilicus fairly wide, open. Aperture a low arch, interiomarginal, extraumbilical-umbilical. Coiling random. Largest diameter of figured hypotype 0.33 mm.
