Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
G. Pregill and T. Worthy 2003Lapitiguana impensa possesses a suit of characters not found in any other iguanid, but its monophyly cannot be demonstrated unequivocally. It has no autapomorphies, and all but one of its known character states are likely ancestral. Lapitiguana appears to be a basal member of Iguanidae. It differs from Brachylophus, the only other southwestern Pacific iguanas, by the parietal foramen located entirely within the frontal, an anterior inferior alveolar foramen in the splenial, caudal vertebrae with autotomic septa, and much larger body size, about 500 mm snout–vent length (SVL). Lapitiguana retains the ancestral condition of the pterygoid tooth row (not laterally displaced posteriorly), which excludes it from the clade ([Amblyrhynchus, Conolophus], Sauromalus, Iguana, Pumilia, Cyclura, Ctenosaura) (Norell and de Queiroz, 1991).
