Taxonomy
Smerdis budensis was named by Heckel (1856) [not the correct original genus]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Blocksberg, which is in an Oligocene marine horizon in Hungary.

It was recombined as Oliganodon budensis by Heckel (1856), Bannikov (2010), Přikryl et al. (2016); it was recombined as Serranus budensis by Danil'chenko (1960), Jerzmanska (1968), Danil'chenko (1980); it was recombined as Oligoserranoides budensis by Prokofiev (2009), Bieńkowska-Wasiluk and Pałdyna (2018).
