Originally ranked as a genus. I have been unable to find the first usage of Pericyclus as a nominate subgenus within genus Pericyclus. It may be the 1957 Treatise (Arkell, et al.)

Taxonomy
Pericyclus (Pericyclus) was named by Mojsisovics (1882). Its type is Goniatites princeps.

It was assigned to Pericyclus by Mojsisovics (1882), Arkell et al. (1957).
