Metacoceras marylandica was named by Lintz (1958). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ames Shale, Garrett County, which is in a Virgilian marine shale in the Conemaugh Formation of Maryland.
It was recombined as Tainoceras marylandicum by Korn and Ghaderi (2025).
