Taxonomy
Ambystoma quetzalcoatli was named by Herrera-Flores and Velasco-de León (2026). Its type specimen is CFZ-ST 1233, a partial skeleton (adult skull with remains of the vertebral column, shoulder girdle and forelimbs), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Paleolake Amajac, Sanctórum, which is in a Pliocene karst siltstone in the Atotonilco el Grande Formation of Mexico.
