Kuangyuanpus was named by Young (1943). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Kuangyuanpus szechuanensis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Batrachopus by Zhen et al. (1989).
It was assigned to Sauropoda by Huene (1958); to Saurischia by Kuhn (1958); to Coelurosauria by Young (1960); to Theropoda by Kuhn (1963); to Sauropoda by Romer (1966); to Crocodylia by Lockley et al. (2013); and to Crocodylia by Lockley et al. (2010), Foster et al. (2025).
