Platyostoma ventricosum was named by Conrad (1842). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Platyceras ventricosum by Hall (1859), Nettelroth (1889); it was recombined as Diaphorostoma ventricosum by Fischer (1885), Clarke (1908); it was recombined as Strophostylus ventricosus by Gillette (1947).
