Lithomelissa was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr m R]. It is extant. Its type is Lithomelissa microptera.

It was assigned to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plagoniidae by Sharma and Takahashi (2007).
