Taxonomy

Eocaiman was named by Simpson (1933). Its type is Eocaiman cavernensis.

It was assigned to Alligatoridae by Simpson (1933), Patterson (1936) and Riff et al. (2010); to Caimaninae by Brochu (1999), Bona (2007), Jouve et al. (2008), Brochu (2010), Brochu (2011), Hastings et al. (2013) and Pinheiro et al. (2013); and to Globidonta by Rio and Mannion (2021).

Synonyms

Notocaiman was named by Rusconi (1937).

It was synonymized subjectively with Eocaiman by Bona et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Alligatoridae by Rusconi (1937); and to Caimaninae by Bona et al. (2018).
Notocaiman stromeri was named by Rusconi (1937). Its type specimen is Rusconi collection - no. 1205, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is 15 km northwest of Puerto Visser, which is in a Danian terrestrial horizon in the Peñas Coloradas Formation of Argentina.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Bona et al. (2022).
