Cernina was named by Gray (1842) [m. kosnik taxon no: 9639]. Its type is Natica fluctuata.

It was reranked as Ampullina (Cernina) by Cossmann and Peyrot (1919) and Vredenburg (1928); it was reranked as Globularia (Cernina) by Dey (1961) and Ladd (1977).

It was assigned to Ampullina by Cossmann and Peyrot (1919) and Vredenburg (1928); to Naticidae by Turner (1938); to Globularia by Dey (1961) and Ladd (1977); to Ampullospirinae by Majima (1989); to Ampullinidae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); and to Ampullospiridae by Kase and Ishikawa (2003).
