Hydrocenidae was named by Troschel (1856) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5278]. It is extant. Its type is Hydrocena.

It was assigned to Neritoidea by Beesley (1998); to Neritacea by Kosnik (2002); and to Hydrocenoidea by Bouchet et al. (2005) and Yu and Neubauer (2021).
