Ostrea mesenterica was named by Morton (1834). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Lopha (Arctostrea) mesenterica by Bobkova (1961); it was recombined as Agorostrea mesenterica by Baird (1984); it was recombined as Lopha mesenterica by Jablonksi (2000); it was recombined as Agerostrea mesenterica by Aberhan (2010).
