Strombus lentiginosus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [m. kosnik taxon no: 10461]. It is extant. It is the type species of Lentigo.

It was recombined as Lentigo lentiginosus by Jousseaume (1886); it was recombined as Strombus (Lentigo) lentiginosus by Jung and Heitz (2001).
