Pachyrhachis was named by Haas (1979). It is not extant. Its type is Pachyrhachis problematicus.

It was assigned to Ophidia by Caldwell and Lee (1997); to Pachyophidae by Lee et al. (1999); to Ophidia by Lee and Scanlon (2002); to Macrostomata by Rieppel et al. (2003); to Alethinophidia by Longrich et al. (2012); and to Ophidia by Lee and Caldwell (1998), Palci et al. (2013).
