Ikechosaurus was named by Sigogneau-Russell (1981). Its type is Ikechosaurus sunailinae.
It was assigned to Champsosauridae by Sigogneau-Russell (1981), Brinkman and Dong (1994), Efimov and Storrs (2000); to Simoedosauridae by Evans (1990), Evans (1991), Liu (2004), Gao and Fox (2005), Zhou and Wang (2010); to Neochoristodera by Matsumoto et al. (2007), Matsumoto and Evans (2010), Matsumoto et al. (2013), Matsumoto et al. (2019); and to Neochoristodera by Dong et al. (2020).
