Gayneoconus echolsi was named by Stinchcomb and Angeli (2002). Its type locality is Locality VI, Potosi Formation, Jefferson-Washington County line - Stinchcomb 198, which is in a Trempealeauan reef, buildup or bioherm dolomite in the Potosi Formation of Missouri.
