Taxonomy
Clevosaurus was named by Swinton (1939). Its type is Clevosaurus hudsoni.
It was assigned to Sphenodontidae by Swinton (1939), Benton (1985), Fraser (1988), Carroll (1988), Reynoso (2000), Apesteguía and Novas (2003), Saila (2005) and Apesteguia et al. (2012); to Rhynchocephalia by Rauhut et al. (2012); and to Clevosauridae by Fraser (1993), Hsiou et al. (2015) and Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).
