Miltoceras was named by Wiedenmayer (1980).
It was assigned to Polymorphitinae by Thomson and Smith (1992); to Eoderoceratidae by Smith and Tipper (1996); to Coeloceratinae by Geczy and Meister (2007); and to Coeloceratidae by Blau (1998), Hillebrandt (2006), Sarih et al. (2007) and Howarth (2013).
