Effigia was named by Nesbitt and Norell (2006). It is not extant. Its type is Effigia okeeffeae. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Suchia by Nesbitt and Norell (2006); to Poposauridae by Fiorelli and Calvo (2008); and to Shuvosauridae by Nesbitt (2011).
