Taxonomy
Helminthozyga costellata was named by Hoare and Sturgeon (1978). Its type specimen is OSU 30409, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAr-2. Spoils bank at James Brothers strip mine on the south side of Huff Run, a, which is in a Missourian coastal shale/limestone in the Washingtonville Formation of Ohio.

R. D. Hoare and M. T. Sturgeon 1978Protoconch normal for family; sutures deeply impressed; phaneromphalus umbilicus; ornamentation of numerous, closely spaced, transverse costellae.

Very small with deeply impressed sutures and a phaneromphalus umbilicus. Protoconch consisting of two to three whorls separated from the teleoconch by a distinct change in the shell. First whorl of protoconch smooth and latter one and one-half whorls marked by sharp opisthocyrt collabral costellae and a fine revolving costella near midwhorl. Teleoconch ornamented with closely spaced, narrow, sigmoidal costellae extending from upper suture to below lower suture. Growth lines parallel costellae.
