Protoarenicola was named by Wang (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: V u Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is not extant. Its type is Protoarenicola baiguashanensis. It is the type genus of Protoarenicolidae.
It was assigned to Protoarenicolidae by Hoffmann (1994); and to Problematica by Sepkoski (2002).
