Amiskwia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u]. Its type is Amiskwia sagittiformis. It is the type genus of Amiskwidae.

It was assigned to Amiskwidae by Walcott (1911); to Problematica by Sepkoski (2002), Bambach et al. (2007); and to Gnathifera by Caron and Cheung (2019).
