Naticopsis phillipsi was named by M'Coy (1844) [Naticopsis Phillipsi]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kilcommock Glebe, which is in a Brigantian carbonate limestone in the Lower Limestone Series Formation of Ireland. It is the type species of Naticopsis, Naticopsis (Naticopsis).
It was recombined as Naticopsis (Naticopsis) phillipsi by Linsley (1968) and Tassell (1982).
