Platyceras (Orthonychia) chesterense was named by Meek and Worthen (1867) [Platyceras (Orthonychia) chesterense Meek & Worthen 1867]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Platyceras chesterense by Keyes (1888); it was recombined as Capulus chesterensis by Keyes (1890), Keyes (1890); it was recombined as Orthonychia chesterensis by Keyes (1894), Thein and Nitecki (1974); it was recombined as Orthonychia chesterense by Wagner (2023).
