Gracilitheca was named by Sysoev (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Cm mMid Sepkoski's reference number: 287,289]. Its type is Gracilitheca ternata. It is the type genus of Gracilithecidae.
It was assigned to Exilithecida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gracilithecidae by Sysoev (1972), Kouchinsky et al. (2011).
