Canopoconus was named by Luo et al. (1982) [Jiang in Luo et al. 1982.]. Its type is Canopoconus calvatus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Maikhanella by Bengtson (1992), Feng et al. (2001), Li et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Maikhanellidae by Ponder et al. (2007), Parkhaev and Demidenko (2010).

P. Y. Parkhaev and Y. Demidenko 2010	"Shell cap-shaped, low conical, moderately elongated. Apex displaced anteriorly. Posterior field evenly convex, sometimes with mid-dorsal buttress. Anterior field straight or slightly concave, can also bear mid-dorsal buttress. Aperture egg-shaped. Exterior ornamentation represented by sharp rhomboid scales, comarginally aligned and placed in staggered order. Apical area of shell smooth."
