Platyceras bivolve was named by White and Whitfield (1862). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Strophostylus bivolvis by Keyes (1890); it was recombined as Strophostylus bivolve by Weller (1900), Yochelson and Saunders (1967).
