Tryblidium unguis was named by Angelin and Lindström (1880) [Tryblidium unguis Lindström in Angelin & Lindström 1880]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Pilina, Tryblidium (Pilina).
It was recombined as Tryblidium (Pilina) unguis by Koken and Perner (1925); it was recombined as Pilina unguis by Peel (1977), Wagner (2023).
