Chaetopleura was named by Shuttleworth (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1029]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Ischnochitonidae by Martin (1904); to Chaetopleurinae by Berry (1922); to Neoloricata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chaetopleuridae by Abbott (1974), Rosenberg (2005), Vendrasco et al. (2022).
