Cymatochiton was named by Dall (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 1029]. Its type is Chiton loftusianus. It is the type genus of Cymatochitonidae.
It was assigned to Cymatochitonidae by Hoare (2002); and to Neoloricata by Sepkoski (2002).
