Tonicia was named by Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1029]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Chiton (Tonicia) by Shuttleworth (1856).

It was assigned to Chiton by Shuttleworth (1856); to Chitoninae by Abbott (1974), Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Toniciinae by Wells and Houston (2001); and to Neoloricata by Sepkoski (2002).
