Taxonomy
Acanthasteridae was named by Sladen (1889). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Leptognathina by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Tripedicellaria by Gale (2011); and to Valvatida by Blake (1979), Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
