Odessites was named by Ljaschenko (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-u D l Sepkoski's reference number: 758]. Its type is Odessites spasovi.

It was assigned to Rossiitidae by Farsan (1994); and to Tentaculitida by Sepkoski (2002).
