Taxonomy
Cardium alaeforme was named by Sowerby (1815) [Cardium alæforme]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Conocardium.

It was corrected as Cardium aliforme by d’Archiac and de Verneuil (1842); it was recombined as Conocardium alaeforme by d'Orbigny (1850), Branson (1958); it was recombined as Conocardium aliforme by Pojeta and Runnegar (1976), Amler and Rogalla (2004).
