Lepeta was named by Gray (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Lepetinae.
It was assigned to Lepetidae by Abbott (1974), Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Patellogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lepetinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
