Voluta sowerbyi was named by Kiener (1839) [TYPE LOCALITY: Possibly Victoria or Tasmania (unknown). Recent. AGE RANGE: Cheltenhamian (Late Miocene)-Recent]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Ericusa sowerbyi by Darragh (1989).
