Neoastieria patagonica was named by Medina and Riccardi (2005) [TYPE LOCALITY: Estancia La Federica, Lago San Martin, Argentina (Upper Aptian). TYPE REPOSITORY: MLP, Argentina]. Its type specimen is MLP15996b and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Rio Mayer Fm (470-500 m) - Estancia La Federica, which is in an Aptian marine shale in the Rio Mayer Formation of Argentina.
